Dominican Republic weddings
The Dominican Republic -- not to be confused with the tiny island of Dominica -- is one of the largest nations in the Caribbean, behind Cuba. It splits the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, yet is completely different. While Haiti has suffered from poor living and working conditions for years, the Dominican Republic has capitalized on its natural resources and has turned itself into one of the largest tourist destinations in the Caribbean. This can be seen as good or bad for destination weddings and wedding photography, depending on your point of view. If you are looking for a true off-the-beaten-path, Robinson Crusoe type adventure, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a wealth of fun activities and a lot of beautiful scenery with good infrastructure and ease of access, give the Dominican Republic serious consideration.
The Dominican Republic does get hit by hurricanes, but it's infrequent even in the Hurricane Season of Aug - November. The last time it got hit was actually more than three decades ago, back in 1979. Knowing this should give you SOME leeway about when to plan your wedding, but use caution. It is really best to avoid a wedding in the Dominican Republic between June and October
Here are some important details: the official language is Spanish, but you can get around a little with English. The major airports are Samana, La Isabela, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana International, Santo Domingo, and Santiago. Punta Cana is the busiest of them all. Be prepared to pay to get out of the airport - there are no courtesy shuttles. Also, beware of the tap water!
Best places to get married on Dominican Republic
I don't even know where to start when describing the best places to get married in the Dominican Republic. Some of the most popular and nicest wedding photography opportunities come at the following resorts: Tortuga Bay at Punta Cana, Gran Bahia Principe Cayo, Levantado on the Samana Peninsula, and Zoetry Agua Punta Cana. Also consider a wedding at Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana, Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa or the Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo, and Caleton Club & Villas. Last, check out Lifestyle Crown Villas and Los Lagos Number 7. Another few select picks are Sivory Punta Cana Boutique, The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real, and the Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda. In reality, there are nearly 500 hotels on the island, so you have a huge range of places to pick from for your wedding.
What to do on Dominican Republic
Another option, besides getting married at a hotel, is to get married at a bed and breakfast or surf camp. The Swell Surf Camp is one of most well regarded B&Bs in the Dominican Republic and it, as well as some of the other similar camps, make a great option for wedding photography in the Dominican Republic. We will actually bring an underwater camera with us to the Dominican Republic weddings we shoot, meaning we can photograph some awesome surf photos of you and your guests. Other super popular bed and breakfasts include The Peninsula House, Albachiara Hotel, the Natura Cabana Boutique Hotel & Spa, Chalet Tropical Village, and the Hotel Sabrina Las Terrenas. If you reall want to spice it up, consider a wedding at Lifestyle Crown Villas. Fantastico!
